Staff Assembly MeetingMinutes

September 7,2005

Sent to Staff-l onOctober 3, 2005

ItemsDiscussed:

-         Anniversary GiftDistribution:  At the present time HR is sending outanniversary cards and Staff Assembly Reps are delivering the giftwallets to supervisors or staff.  Two options are to have HRdeliver both together (to supervisors?) or for Staff Assemblymembers to get the cards from HR and deliver them with the wallets. As Marcia said in her email to all staff the milestone gifts areback-ordered and will be distributed as soon as theyarrive.

-         Schedulingmeetings with Committees to discuss roles and responsibilities: Jobdescriptions for each committee do exist and Krystal will get theseout to executive committee members.  Executive committee willwork on redefining/updating them.

-          Compensationconsultant report follow up:  Having met with Thayne Trevorconcluded that among staff and the staff assembly the concept of“Pay for Performance” is a good idea.  However there are manyobstacles that need to be overcome before it can be fullyimplemented.  The challenge now is to identify those obstaclesand work through them one at a time which could be a very lengthyprocess.  At this time “Pay for Performance” is off thetable until some of these obstacles can be resolved. Suggestion was made that we explore a partnership with the Schoolof Business – Human Resource faculty and students to help with aself-study.  Good for us – experience for them.

-         Increase staffinvolvement on Staff Assembly/ thoughts from meeting with Thayne:It was noted that perhaps we don’t adequately represent the widerange of diversity among staff at the university and that somestaff may feel alienated, disengaged or disenfranchised from theStaff Assembly.  How can we turn this around?

o       Should we be moreproactive in making sure the Executive Council has betterrepresentation from the different groups?  Amend ourstructure?  Is Exempt/Non-exempt adequate?

o       Can we do abetter job of inviting supervisors to planning sessions for suchevents as “Heads-Up”?

o       Can we getagendas for our meetings out one week in advance so more staffmight be interested and come?

o       Can we do abetter job of distributing our minutes?
