GonzagaUniversity

Memorandum

To:             Staff Assembly Executive Council

From:          Compensation Committee

Subject:       Staff Salaries

Date:           May 8, 2002

At present, Gonzaga University staff are unable tomove beyond the mid-point of their pay scales.  In recent years, with theincreased cost of medical insurance and the 3-year reallocation ofpremium tiers for spouses and dependents, lower paid staff withdependent coverage have received less net pay even with theirraises.

In addition, as enrollment has steadilyincreased over the past four years so have workloads.  There are more students oncampus and retention continues to remain strong.  We believe this can betraced back to the Mission Statement of the University.  The Mission states, “AsJesuit, we are inspired by the vision of Christ at work in theworld, transforming it by His love, and calling people to work withHim in loving service of the human community.”  The staff at Gonzagabelieve in providing this service to our students and thecommunity.  Therefore, not only are students coming to Gonzaga, but they are staying atGonzaga.  Additionalstaff are not being hired to support the increase in volume oftheir workloads. Existing staff are desperately trying to keep up with this increaseand to continue to provide the “loving service” that studentsexpect from Gonzaga. This situation is very discouraging.

The Compensation Committee is aware thatHuman Resources currently has a proposal pending withAdministration to move staff members into the third quartile oftheir pay scales.  Wesupport the effort Human Resources is making to improve staffsalaries.  TheCompensation Committee requests the opportunity to review theproposal made by Human Resources as well as to be involved in itsimplementation.

This has been a great year for theUniversity.  In lightof the surplus and the capital campaign, this is an opportune timefor the Administration to invest in its staff who support theUniversity to Educate People the World Needs Most.
