Hooker Creek Ranch Scholarship
2010-2011 Recipient: Benji Schwarz
Benji comes to Gonzaga University from Bend, where his family has lived since the mid-‘90s. His father is a structural engineer and his mother worked as an analytical biologist before becoming a full-time mom raising Benji and his five siblings. Benji loves living in Bend: "You can escape the artificial world and get into the wild by walking a quarter of a mile from your house. People seem less stressed, less in a hurry and more willing to talk to you."
When he was a student at Bend Senior High School he focused his electives on drafting and architecture, and even designed several buildings. "The resources for college prep at the school were awesome and allowed me to complete my first semester and a half of college before I graduated."
Benji is in his final year at Gonzaga; he is a Biochemistry major. He enjoys conducting independent research for the Chemistry department. Another passion - being on the rowing team.
His plans after Gonzaga include pursuing a graduate degree in Bioengineering. But for now, he is enjoying his last year at GU and its "small community, where you can get to know every professor in your department and everyone in your classes."
Benji asked that this message be shared with the benefactor behind his scholarship: "Thanks for the support. I feel I've successfully multiplied the value of your investment and I hope that you're of the same opinion."
