Students make book dream come true

By Peter Tormey

Last October, two Gonzaga seniors Dean Robbins and Rob Grabow published a book of political discourse from college students nationwide. The enterprising Zags struck a nerve with the anthology, "What We Think: Young Voters Speak Out," which was released Oct. 25 and published by the company they founded, College Tree Publishing http://www.collegetreepublishing.com.

Robbins and Grabow continue to work on "What We Think About God," and "What We Think II," and hope to have negotiations with publishers completed by September. In January of this year, Seth Spores, a centrist-leaning Libertarian, joined the team. Spores received a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in economics from the University of Oregon. Currently, Robbins is working at The Boeing Co., in Seattle, and Grabow is working full time on the book project and taking part-time jobs along the way, until an agreement is closed with a publisher. Also, the three are looking forward to publishing a third book, "In Pursuit of God: 101 Fresh Looks at Spirituality," by spring 2006.

Robbins and Grabow are a study in contrasts. Grabow is a Democrat and a business major, while Robbins is a Republican and a 2005 graduate with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Neither Robbins or Grabow ever dream they'd be discussing the book on CNN and MSNBC.

Heated social and political topics from a cross section of America make up the nonpartisan collection of quips, essays, poems, and pictures. They solicited essays from their Web site and by contacting political clubs at universities nationwide. In their first book, essay topics range from anarchy to terrorism to elections, from Iraq to globalization, from feeding the poor to saving the economy. The book includes only about 25 percent of the submissions from students 18 to 24 at nearly 100 American colleges and universities.

Sales for their first book nearly reached the top 100 bestsellers on the Barnes and Noble Web site (www.barnesandnoble.com). Since the election, however, sales have slowed as the enterprising young men complete their two new books: "What We Think About God," and "What We Think II," a sequel to their first book.

The book is available online at www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com.
