Wireless Services

Wireless access has come to the Residence Halls!  Here are some Do's and Don'ts when using the Wireless Network:
Do:
  • Practice responsible computing
  • Respect University equipment and systems
  • Use and keep up-to-date virus protection software to protect yourself and others
  • Remember: some Wireless Networks on campus may not be encrypted
  • Remember: using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone or microwave may cause interference with the Wireless Network
  • Turn off your Wireless network on your computer when not using it

Don't:

  • Give or type passwords or credit card numbers while using the wireless network.  If you absolutely must do banking or make purchases over the wireless network, make sure the site is secure.  Look for https ('s' for secure) in the web address/URL when entering payment information or look for a lock in the lower right hand corner of the page.  You may also see the lock as an icon on your toolbar.
  • Use a personal wireless router or access point to create your own LAN in your residence hall room
  • Deliberately waste bandwidth (i.e. gaming, file sharing, etc.).  Wireless bandwidth in the dorms is shared
  • Tamper with the telephone jack, data jack or any wiring
  • Connect a computer other than your own to your data jack
  • Make copies of any copyrighted material, like video, books, magazines, or music without the permission of the author, publisher, or artist
