Job Purpose
The Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies at Gonzaga invites applications or nominations for a tenure-track position that could start as early as September 2012. The individual occupying this position will join the four current faculty members as part of a five faculty member team committed to supporting our students and in maintaining the international prominence of the Program in the field of leadership studies. The Program leads to a Ph.D. and is based on the Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person. The Program is designed for scholars pursuing a doctoral degree in leadership studies, including working professionals across a range of professions such as philosophy of leadership, health care, social services, higher education, church, business, engineering, government, and K-12 education. The Program is interdisciplinary and designed to develop scholarship and professional competencies while encouraging self-reflection and strengthening a commitment of service to others. The Program has always attracted highly motivated students. During the past decade the Program has been successful in recruiting a diverse population of students. Our students engage in rigorous scholarship relevant to leadership that makes a difference. This position requires (a) strong commitment to students and student success and (b) evidence of the ability to work collaboratively with and provide support to colleagues. Essential Functions
  • Maintain an active scholarship and research agenda focused on topics relevant to the Program. The successful candidate will be expected to have or to establish a reputation as a leadership studies scholar with appropriate involvement with professional organizations and publication in appropriate leadership studies journals in addition to their academic specialization. Desirable areas of scholarship specialization include leadership theory especially interdisciplinary approaches to leadership theory, cross-cultural and critical approaches to leadership theory, and policy as it relates to leadership especially as an interface between leadership and complex systems.
  • Teach courses in the following areas: (a) leadership theory; (b) cross-cultural and critical approaches to leadership theory such as gender-based leadership, feminist theory, critical race theory, and (c) policy and complex social systems. In addition to the areas above, teach courses in one or more of the following areas: (a) philosophy and ethics of leadership; and (h) religious studies and leadership. (b) organizational theory and change, (c) communication and leadership; and (d) civic leadership/social justice. Faculty members in the Doctoral Program are expected to teach during summer semesters as well as during the regular academic semesters.
  • Teach methods courses in both Qualitative and Quantitative research, but with primary focus on qualitative research. Candidate must have sufficient appreciation for and background to teach quantitative research and chair quantitative as well as qualitative dissertations. Experience with mixed methods and theoretical research in addition to qualitative and quantitative research is desirable.
  • The Program is a doctoral level program and a significant part of the faculty load is advising students and chairing and serving on a variety of dissertation committees. Most faculty members will chair a minimum of four dissertations to completion each year.
  • Participate in university and community service activities, including university, school, and department meetings and events. The successful candidate will be expected to be fully engaged in department activities including but not limited to working on curriculum redesign, timely submission of course syllabi and book lists, to have or to be committed to developing sufficient web capabilities to maintain their course syllabi on the Gonzaga web site, be willing to engage in the design and delivery of a variety of courses, serve in rotation as the department chair, and attend both department and student sponsored events. It should be noted that the position requires a commitment to significant time at university events outside of teaching and office hours.
