What to Expect

Below you will find information on DREAM's process for securing accommodations and information on some of the more common accommodations used by students.

Process for Securing Accommodations

Gonzaga University students who require access or accommodation due to a disability must contact DREAM. Students must complete the DREAM process for acquiring accommodations.  Both permanent and temporary conditions can qualify for accommodation. It is wise for first-semester freshmen to begin this process as soon as they decide to attend Gonzaga.

There are three steps to the DREAM process for acquiring accommodations:

Step 1- Submitting Documentation

If your student is seeking treatment for a condition, ask his or her treating professional to complete the following Medical Documentation Form and send it to DREAM: Medical Documentation Form.

If your student has a learning disability, or any other diagnosis that required a neuropsychological evaluation, please send the full report to DREAM.  You do not need to send the Medical Documentation Form in addition to the full neuropsychological evaluation.

If you are unsure if your student's medical condition qualifies for disability accommodations, please call the DREAM office and request an inquiry appointment.  Inquiry appointments can occur over the phone.  Alternately, you can e-mail us at disability@gonzaga.edu

Step 2- Intake Appointment

DREAM will review your student's documentation and create a draft accommodation plan.  DREAM can take up to 10 business days to review your student's documentation.  Once the review is complete, we will contact you to schedule an intake appointment.

We use best practices procedures to determine the limitations caused by your student's diagnosis.  In addition, your student will have an opportunity to provide details about his or her situation and make specific accommodation requests.  

For first-semester freshmen students, often parents desire to be present at the intake appointment.  Although parents are welcome, they are not required.  We welcome parents to use this as an opportunity to discuss with their student the accommodations they have had in high school and what they need to talk to the DREAM staff person about.

Also, accommodation plans can be updated at any time (provided sufficient documentation is available).  So if your student realizes after their intake appointment that they need an additional accommodation, this can be addressed rather simply.

Step 3- Notifying Professors

After your student's intake appointment he or she will have access to an electronic disability accommodation letter.  It is the student's responsibility to deliver this letter to his or her professors and request accommodation.  This last step is rather foreign to first semester freshmen.  DREAM provides assistance for students who are unsure how to approach their professors.  Parents can help their student by reminding them to talk with their professors about their accommodations.  Accommodation letters must be delivered in a timely manner for accommodations to be implemented efficiently.

Testing Accommodations

DREAM has testing rooms available for students with testing accommodations.  Most students with testing accommodation, such as extra time or a quiet environment, take their exams at DREAM.

Note-taking Accommodations

DREAM uses a volunteer note-taking system.  If your student needs a note-taker as an accommodation, we will discuss the process for obtaining a volunteer note-taker at the intake appointment.

E-text ("audio-books")

DREAM provides textbooks in electronic format for students with conditions that affect reading.  Your student will be responsible for purchasing hard copies of their textbooks and providing a receipt to DREAM for our records.  We can then obtain electronic copies from publishers.  Some students with visual, reading and/or focus challenges use text-to-speech software in college.  Reading loads will be heavier in college and first semester of freshmen year is not the time to be experimenting with new technologies.  If your student struggles with reading, ask him or her to try using a program such as Natural Reader before coming to college.

Housing Accommodations

DREAM approves housing accommodations for students with medical conditions that require specific types of living environments.  DREAM cannot "prescribe" specific buildings as accommodations.  We can describe a specific environment that meets a students medical needs, for example, "ground floor residence" or "suite-style living."  Please note that there are no guaranteed "quiet" residences and therefore we are unable to offer quiet residence as an accommodation.  If your student will need a quiet space to study, talk with him or her about other spaces on campus that are available for study, such as Foley Library, which is often open late into the night.

Meal Plan Accommodations

If you are concerned that your student's dietary needs cannot be met by Dining Services, please contact DREAM for information on requesting a meal plan accommodation or exemption.  Dining Services is able to accommodate the needs of most students.  Meal plan exemptions are less common than meal plan accommodations.  Food allergies and auto-immune conditions such as IBS are common reasons for a meal plan accommodation.
