Accommodation Letter Information

List of common classroom accommodations found on a student's accommodation letter (this list is not exhaustive):
 

% Additional Testing Time: Extended time testing provides time compensation for students with conditions that affect their ability to demonstrate knowledge in a timed environment. You are encouraged to provide this student with their extended testing time during the class if possible; if not, the Academic Testing Center has space available and can proctor the exam for you.  Students with accommodations schedule their exams online with the Academic Testing Center. 

Access to classroom slideshows: Some students have conditions that physically limit their ability to write notes. Others have conditions that affect their ability to synthesize information while actively listening. Providing the student with access to the slideshows in advance allows them to their own notes. Blackboard is a useful venue to provide student access to multimedia materials used in the classroom.

Access to Computer for Note-taking: When a student's dexterity or cognition limits their ability to hand write, access to a computer allows them to take their own notes during class. If you have a "no laptop" policy in your class, please make arrangements with this student to use his or her laptop. It is reasonable to require that he or she follow a "no internet" policy while in class. The student only needs access to a word processing program.

Access to Food & Drink in the Classroom: Allowing the student to consume their own food and/or drinks in the classroom provides the ability to manage a variety of health conditions that are affected by diet. The student is expected to be discreet if they need to use this accommodation during lecture. If access to food and/or drink in your classroom/lab could be problematic, please  contact DREAM.

Attendance Policy Flexibility: Attendance flexibility provides a reasonable amount of absences beyond the university policy for students with medical conditions that can affect their ability to attend class due to excessive symptoms of their condition, medical appointments, and/or brief hospitalizations. This accommodation includes reasonable extensions on assignments when applicable. This accommodation is interactive in nature. The student is required to contact you if he or she is missing class due to disability.

Audio-Format Exams: Providing exams in an auditory format increases comprehension and reading rate for students with conditions that affect reading. DREAM converts exams to an auditory format. We will request your exam in advance for this purpose.

Braille: Braille provides access to text material, through raised dots, for students with conditions that affect seeing and/or reading. DREAM provides this accommodation. Please send all printed classroom materials to DREAM for conversion.

Breaks during exams: Allowing breaks during exams provide students with the opportunity to manage the requirements of their condition(s), i.e., bathroom use, medication dosing, rest breaks for pain, etc. Break time is not in addition to testing time.

Closed Captioning: Creates access to audio/visual materials for students with conditions that affect hearing and/or processing auditory information. If you plan to show DVDs or videos in your class, please turn on the closed captioning. Contact DREAM if you need assistance.

Computer Use for Adaptive Technology on Exams: Providing adaptive technology can create physical and/or cognitive access to exam materials for students with conditions that affect any major life function. DREAM provides access to adaptive technologies. Please contact DREAM if you would like more information about the specific adaptive technology that this student uses.

Computer Use for Essay Exams: Word processing allows students with physical impairments and students with conditions that affect their ability to write, an equal platform for written expression as non-disabled students using pen and paper. DREAM can provide computers for this purpose if you wish to proctor the student's exams.

Distraction-Reduced Testing Space: Providing a distraction-reduced testing space allows an equal opportunity to demonstrate knowledge for students with conditions that affect focus and/or attention. If you have access to a distraction-reduced space, you are encouraged to provide this student's testing accommodations. DREAM also has testing space available. The student must contact us to schedule use of this space.

Large Print: Larger sized print documents provide access to text material for students with conditions that affect seeing and/or reading. Ask the student what font size they need in order to be able to access your material. Please contact DREAM for assistance with conversion of print materials.

Live Captioning: Live captioning creates real-time text of auditory communication in the classroom. This accommodation creates equal access for students with conditions that affect hearing and/or processing auditory information. DREAM coordinates this accommodation. We will be in contact with you regarding the specifics.

Modified Furniture: Placing specialized furniture in the classroom provides equal access for students with conditions that affect their ability to use standard desks. DREAM will clearly mark and place this furniture in your classroom. Please notify us if you see that this student's furniture is missing.

No Scantron-type Answer Sheets: Some students have conditions that limit their ability to track either horizontally or vertically with their eyes. Please allow this student to answer directly on the exam sheets or write his or her answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Note-taker: Some students have conditions that physically limit their ability to write notes. Others have conditions that affect their ability to synthesize information while actively listening. A volunteer note-taker allows the student to focus on instruction and obtain notes from a fellow classmate. The student will contact you if he or she needs assistance acquiring a note-taker in your class. Reader for Exams: A live reader provides text-to-speech services for students with conditions that affect their ability to read. DREAM coordinates readers for students. We may contact you if we need a subject-specific reader.

Reasonable Extensions on Assignments: Approving reasonable extensions on assignments allows an equal opportunity to submit assignments for students with conditions that affect executive functioning and for students who are out of class using the attendance flexibility accommodation. The student is required to contact you each time he or she is requesting an extension. Setting a new deadline is typically more successful than allowing an open-ended due date.

Recording of Lecture: Some students have conditions that physically limit their ability to write notes. Others have conditions that affect their ability to synthesize information while actively listening. Recording the lecture allows the student to focus on instruction and take notes later. The student will communicate with you in advance regarding recording of lectures. This student has signed a policy at DREAM regarding appropriate use of recorded lectures. Please contact DREAM for more information.

Scribe for Exams: A live scribe provides handwritten materials for students with conditions that affect their ability to write. DREAM coordinates scribes for students. We may contact you if we need a subject-specific scribe.

Sign Language Interpreter: An interpreter provides communication exchanges for students with conditions that affect hearing and/or communication. DREAM coordinates this accommodation with local vendors. Please contact DREAM about working with interpreters.

Solitary Testing Space: Providing a solitary testing space allows an equal opportunity to demonstrate knowledge for students with conditions that greatly affect focus and/or attention. Solitary testing spaces are also appropriate for students with conditions that have symptoms which would be distracting to other testers. If you have access to a solitary space, you are encouraged to provide this student's testing accommodations. DREAM also has limited solitary testing space available. The student must contact us to schedule use of this space.

Sound-amplification system: Providing use of a small sound-amplification system provides volume control for students with conditions that affect hearing and/or auditory processing. The student will be asking you to wear a small lavalier style microphone. Since his or her classmates will not be speaking into the microphone, please repeat comments/questions.

Speech-to-text Software: Speech-to-text software provides access to computers and word processing programs for students with conditions that affect mobility and/or writing. DREAM provides access to this technology. This is being provided for your information only.

Use of Calculator on Exams: Some students have conditions that affect their ability to complete mathematical calculations. Providing access to a basic four-function calculator provides the student with an equal opportunity situation.
