Resources for Teaching and Advising
The scholarship of teaching and learning recognizes that our teaching practices, and the learning process of our students, can be investigated in a formal, rigorous, and scholarly way. It promotes the idea that this kind of reflective practice is critical to our success as teachers, and is a rewarding intellectual activity in itself. In 2012 - 2013, the CTA is sponsoring the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Initiative which supports Gonzaga faculty members who are interested in investigating some aspect of the teaching and/or learning that goes on in their classes. More information on SoTL can be found in the Resources section for that initiative.
Educating for Civic Responsibility
The Carnegie Foundation's Political Engagement Project was an interdisciplinary project aimed at addressing the growing disengagement of young people from civic life and the political process. It produced the 2007 book "Educating for Democracy: Preparing Undergraduates for Responsible Political Engagement". There is also a companion document supplement website where you can find a number of examples of approaches and teaching materials that faculty have used at a variety of undergraduate institutions to foster the political engagement of their students.
