Coaching for Academic Success

Gonzaga's Coaching for Academic Success Program connects students to certified academic coaches for guidance, weekly check-ins, and academic skills development that really pay off.  Any student can request a coach.  Students work with coaches on academic achievement, personal organization, goal setting, motivation, academic focus, fast tracking academic and co-curricular activities, or any other activity where having a partner and guide helps.  Academic success coaches are juniors and seniors who are both successfully accomplishing academic and personal goals at Gonzaga, and interested in helping others do the same.

Academic Success Coaches are:

  • Experienced and successful Gonzaga students with a desire to help others enjoy the best of what GU has to offer
  • Trained and certified as Coaches through COR (the Center for Organizational Reform), a teaching, research, and consulting group based in Spokane
  • Familiar with Gonzaga and the many challenges of college life
  • Available, one-on-one, to help you;
    • Set and accomplish goals
    • Stay on track and motivated
    • Access resources on-campus
    • Find ways to get involved in areas of academic and social interest
    • Get and stay organized in your school work
    • Be accountable and action-oriented

Students who engage Academic Success Coaches are:

  • Smart to gather support resources early for their academic and personal success
  • Interested in getting organized for their courses, work, life
  • Willing to bring out their strengths and apply them to the challenges of college life
  • Wanting a regular weekly check-in with someone dedicated to their success
  • Able to learn and apply new skills essential for college success such as:
    • Time management
    • Personal organization
    • Note and test-taking skills
    • Strategies to beat procrastination
    • Personal responsibility and accountability
    • Goal setting and tracking accomplishments
  • Ready to fulfill their academic and personal potential at Gonzaga

THE PROGRAM:

Students attend topical sessions on personal and academic skills during the early weeks of the semester.  Students are then matched with personal Academic Success Coaches and begin meeting weekly for one-on-one, structured sessions that focus on setting and achieving personal and academic goals.  Each individual meeting begins with a check-in about the prior week's activities, a review of successes and challenges, and identification of what needs to be done in the upcoming week.  Coaches both challenge students to work toward their goals, providing guidance and connection to campus resources as needed, and celebrate student successes.  Coaches are engaging and expert guides to student success at Gonzaga and beyond.

As with any endeavor, students are ultimately responsible for their own success.  Students seeking an opportunity to get plugged into all that Gonzaga has to offer are encouraged to take a look at the Coaching for Academic Success Program.  There is a coach out there just right for you!

COST:  The cost for one semester (fall or spring) of academic coaching is $360, which includes 10 individual weekly coaching sessions and all topical programs offered throughout the semester.  Additional individual meeting hours per week may be added for an additional charge.  Some financial assistance may be available to qualified students.
