Biology
The College of Arts & Sciences offers the following Biology majors:
- Bachelor of Science in Biology
- Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a research option
- Bachelor of Arts in Biology
- Bachelor of Arts in Biology, with a research option
Biology (BIOL) majors take the following science courses in the first semester:
- BIOL 105 Information Flow in Biological Systems
- BIOL 105L Information Flow in Biological Systems lab
- CHEM 101 General Chemistry
- CHEM 101L General Chemistry lab
Biology majors will also be placed in Pathways (UNIV 104), a one-credit freshman seminar course, taught by your Biology faculty advisor.
Students interested in pursuing the research option may also be placed in a math course first semester.

You will follow the 2013-14 Undergraduate Catalogue - this is your contract with the University, and vis versa. Be sure to review the information in the 13-14 catalogue when it becomes available (the catalogue is still under review, and should be posted to the website this summer). Until then, please refer to the 2012-2013 Undergraduate Catalogue, as much of the information is the same.
Please be advised: Students intending to major in the sciences must be strong in science and math. To ensure your readiness for this type of major, you should have completed the following in high school:
- 3 years of science
- 4 years of math (through at least advanced algebra)
- no less than a B in any science or math course
Furthermore, you should understand that you will be taking at least two science courses every semester for four years. Any deviation will cause a delay in your four-year graduation plan.
