University Stewardship and Sustainability Initiatives

Buildings

  • Paccar Addition - the addition to the Paccar engineering building is silver level LEED certified

CCASL - Center for Community Action and Service Learning

  • Environmental Outreach - this program works cooperatively with Spokane-area nonprofits to identify genuine environmentally-related community needs and build relationships that connect GU students to regional nonprofits that work on social justice issues.
  • Servivce Berry
  • The Notebook Projecttakes cereal box-type cardboard (pressed board) and used, one-sided paper, and binds them into notebooks that are sold at CCASL and the campus book store. All profits fund Earthbound, where GU volunteers go to local elementary and middle school to run after school activities that are fun and environmentally educational.
  • Spokane River Cleanup - in this annual effort hundreds of volunteers come together to clean-up the riverbanks of the Spokane River.
  • Earthbound - a program that takes GU student volunteers to local middle and elementary schools to run after school activities that are fun and environmentally educational.

Dining Services

  • Gonzaga Dining Sustainability Initiatives- includes information about buying local, water conservation, waste reduction, reducing hunger in our community, fair trade, recycling, organics, fair trade, and biodiesel

Energy

Grounds

  • Composting - GU participates in Spokane's "clean green" program, composting over 35 tons of leaves and needles annually

Information Technology

  • Using thin clients (resulting in reduced power consumption and reduced waste) in labs and in the Library.
  • Beginning to move toward VPro automated power management functionality on desktop computers (longer-term objective)
  • Beginning to evaluate virtual desktop technology where appropriate (much larger scale implementation of technology similar to thin clients).
  • Made, and continue to make, a significant investment in server virtualization technology, which results in appreciable reductions in power consumption and waste.

AASHE - Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) GU Chapter

  • Chapter Advisor: Dr. Phil Appel (appel@gonzaga.edu)
  • AASHE Projects
    • Sustainable 3rd World Studies - including work on designs for windmills, solar water heaters, and grain dryers
    • Energy efficiency at GU - including work on parasitic power reduction and green switch design, motion sensors, thermal control program
    • Renewable material technology adoption at GU - including biodiesel, composting, recycled paper, electric vehicles for GU fleet, plastic bottle banning
    • Student-faculty transportation programs - including green bike program, electric vehicle charging, public transportation education

GEO - Gonzaga Environmental Organization student club

  • Lug A Jug campaign - supports the removal of water bottles on campus and use of personal water bottles, provides stickers to those with personal bottles (Bottled Water Facts)
  • Lug A Mug Campaign - sells affordable stainless steel mugs to promote reduction of waste, reuse of resources, increases awareness of on-campus paper cup waste, offers 35 cent discount at coffee shops on campus
  • Recycling Week - teaming up with other on campus clubs to promote recycling on campus and make it more convenient for students
  • Scotchman's Peaks dinner- a dinner to raise awareness of a proposed wilderness area in Northern Idaho, a popular site for GU students to bike and hike
  • Earth Week activities - a week to promote awareness on campus of environmental issues in Spokane and at GU
