Charles A. and Dolores A. Barry Memorial Scholarship
2010-2011 Recipient: Alyssa Crawford
Alyssa, a Broadcast Journalism major in her junior year, has wanted to be on TV since she was in fourth grade. “Obviously back then it just sounded really cool, but the older I became, and as I took classes related to this field such as writing, speech, and anything else related to communications, I realized that this is truly something I would like to pursue. I am really excited to be able to inform people through media. Media is a very powerful tool that is too often abused, but I would like to show people how positive of an impact this tool can have. I love interacting with people and want to be able to do that every single day!” Her dream is to become a news anchor.
She comes to Gonzaga from Mead Senior High School, and chose Gonzaga because of its strong academic reputation. “I wanted to attend a university that would be academically challenging, care about me as a person, and be a place where I could meet great people. I am fortunate that this school happened to exist in my own city! I really like the overall environment that Gonzaga presents. All of my professors have been more than helpful and willing to do what they can to help me succeed. Fellow students have been very friendly and kind if I ever have a question about GU or even just want to form a study group!”
Alyssa’s family is especially proud of her, as she is the first in her family to attend a four-year college. “My dad does have his AA degree from Spokane Community College, but none of my aunts, uncles, or grandparents have college degrees. I feel very lucky to have the passion to learn and get my four-year degree!”
Alyssa is deeply grateful for her scholarship: “The Barry Memorial Scholarship has meant everything to me and had a huge influence on my final decision to keep studying at Gonzaga. I am paying for college all on my own through loans and some scholarship. Thanks to this award, I can have a better future because I am able to attend a private university. Because of this scholarship, my entire life has been changed in a very positive way.”
