Application advice:
Take your time, be neat, and let the folks reading your application know who you are through your essay and activities
Advice during the college search:
Start your college search broadly and then narrow it down. Start thinking about big categories:
- Do I want to be in a big city, small town, or does it matter?
- Do I care about the size of the school? If so, what is important to me?
- What do I want to study? Do I want to have room to change my mind, or search for a school known for a focus - like Engineering?
- What kind of extracurricular opportunities are important to me? Etc.
Then utilize web sites and guidebooks to help you find some colleges that may work for you. Both the Collegeboard.org and ACT.org have college searches that allow you to put in many criteria to find schools that may be a match given your interests. Your high school counselors, school and public libraries, and local bookstores all carry college guidebooks that can be helpful.
Once you narrow down some options, try to visit schools of interest. Getting your feet on campus makes a big difference. All schools will send publications with great pictures of their campuses. See for yourself what it is really like. If you can't visit a school, ask to interview students who attend the school from your geographic location. Getting a first-hand perspective can be very helpful as well.
Final advice for college-bound students:
Don't slack off on schoolwork senior year!
