How to Locate Periodicals

  • Do you have some time to read, but not enough time to start a whole book? How about browsing a magazine?
  • Do you want to check the market, the scores or find a movie for the weekend? National, regional and local newspapers are a good place to look.
  • Do you want to round out your research and impress your professor? Scholarly periodicals and documents found only on microforms may be the answer.
Come to the periodicals area on the lower level of Foley Center for relaxing reading, timely information and research support.

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT PERIODICALS
Periodicals are magazines, newspapers and other items that are issued more frequently than one time a year. With over 1200 titles currently purchased for the collection, every reader is sure to find something of interest. Our periodicals are selected primarily to support Gonzaga's diverse academic program, with many offerings directed to the enrichment of the student reader. In Foley Center the periodicals are located on the lower level and can not be checked out of the library. To serve our patrons, copy machines are located throughout the building.

CURRENT PERIODICALS
Current periodicals are arranged around the study tables and reading area on the lower level. This section houses new periodicals prior to their being bound. It is organized alphabetically by title of the publication.
BOUND PERIODICALS
Materials in the bound periodical area are cataloged using Library of Congress call numbers. Often the periodicals are sturdy enough to stand on their own, but some are bound like books, and others are arranged in boxes. (See HOW TO LOCATE PERIODICALS for information on finding the call numbers).

NEWSPAPERS
Foley Center receives a variety of daily and weekly newspapers. A list of current newspaper titles is available at the Periodicals Desk and the Reference Desk. The current newspapers are kept on spindles on the newspaper racks and older issues are on the shelves directly behind the newspaper area.

MICROFORMS
Foley Center has extensive microforms holdings. This includes such items as the Schomburg collection, ERIC documents and Dissertation Abstracts along with the usual array of newspapers and journals.
