/Peace Corps

Gonzaga's PCMI program

is a joint degree with Peace Corps in which students receive a foundation in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Studies in Language & Culture and then complete the degree by doing a three-credit (tuition waived) practicum with Peace Corps while earning an additional seven credits (non-waived) based on their service as a Peace Corps volunteer.The program is designed to provide participants with the skills needed to participate in Peace Corps TEFL and TEFL teacher training programs. pcmi@gonzaga.edu. 

Degree Offered:

Peace Corps Master's International (PCMI) program, MA in Teaching English as a Second Language: Studies in Language & Culture.

Length of Program:

Four semesters (including summer I and II) plus 27 months of Peace Corps service. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of the fall, spring or summer semesters.

Program Requirements:

36 credits. Competence in a language other than English is required for native English speaking students. A portfolio based on work and research completed during the program is required.

Admission Requirements:

Gonzaga University requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with an average cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. The GRE is not required. Applicants must also meet all Peace Corps requirements. Nonnative speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of 550 (CBT 230; IBT 80) or graduate from Gonzaga University’s ESL program with a faculty recommendation (3.0 GPA or higher). The ESL program is directly linked to the MA/TESL-PCMI program.

Tuition, Fees, and Aid:

$870 per credit hour. Some financial aid, including merit-based awards such as graduate assistantships, is available. Three of the 10 Peace Corps credits are tuition-waived.

Internships with the Peace Corps are available through this program.
