Insurance Guidelines
Gonzaga University takes a conservative approach to the visa regulations for foreign students. The regulations clearly state that J-1 Students and their dependents must have adequate coverage for the duration of their studies in the United States.
All exchange visitors (both J-1 and J-2) are required to have sickness and accident insurance and medical evacuation and repatriation insurance in effect for the duration of their exchange visitor status. 22.C.F.R. § 62.14 regulations require that the following features be included in the student's insurance policy:
- $50,000 per accident or illness
- Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500
- $10,000 coverage for medical evacuation
- a deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
Also in accordance with regulations of I-20's F-1 students, the I-20 clearly states that health insurance is a required part of the estimated expenses. This is explained in section 3.4.1.1.7 of the NAFSA Advisors Handbook.
Item 7d (of the I-20) should contain total figures of "other" expenses that the student will occur, such as books, supplies, and health insurance
Based on these regulations, the insurance requirement applies to both J-1 and F-1 students. No exceptions will be made.
Because the regulations for F-1 students do not specify the extent of coverage, the International Student Programs office of Gonzaga University reserves the right to make the same requirements mandatory as departmental policy. The department recognizes the desire for insurance while traveling to and from the university and recommends students obtain "trip insurance" which covers them during travel to and from the United States.
