Bartlett to Leave Gonzaga in May - 4/27/07

Bob Bartlett, director of multicultural education, will leave Gonzaga on May 31 after being on staff for 18 years. Bartlett, who is African-American, also served as assistant dean of students in the past.

Committee Seeks Change to Sexual Abuse Policy - 4/27/07

After four meetings over the past several months, the Sexual Abuse Policy Review Committee voted Wednesday to support three changes to the University's Sexual Misconduct Policy, which will strengthen the language of the policy and more clearly outline sanctions for sexual misconduct.

Unity House Falls Under Leadership of Student Life Office - 4/27/07

Unity House staff and facilities will soon come under the umbrella of Student Life. The goal is to involve the cultural diversity house in more Student Life activities, according to Raymond Reyes, associate mission vice president for intercultural relations. The restructuring also involves the departure of Bob Bartlett, director of multicultural education.

International Student Union Dinner to Be Held on Saturday - 4/20/07

With food, dances, fashion shows and musical performances representing 16 countries and six continents, the International Student Union is set to hold its annual dinner Saturday. Contemporary and traditional culture will come together as dishes ranging from Japanese onigiri (rice balls with meat) to Taiwanese jau yen shia (salt and pepper shrimp) are served.

Students to Travel Abroad for Research - 4/20/07

Fifteen students will travel to Zambia this summer to study comparative psychology through naturalistic field research of chimpanzees at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world.

Luau Slated to Bring Cultural Experience to Gonzaga - 4/13/07

When the History and Travel Channel, the Food Network and an MTV music video are combined the outcome is "Dancing With The Stars" -- with a twist. Actually, it is "The Navigating Stars," the luau put on by the Hawaii Pacific Islander Club (HPIC). The luau is an educational and entertaining cultural experience, which brings life to the history and traditions of Polynesia through dance and performance. In addition, HPIC prepares a traditional dinner.

Gay Rights and the Day of Silence - 4/13/07

"Day of Silence is a day aimed at ending the discrimination faced by the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community. Even if you don't consider yourself an ally of the GLBT community, this is an opportunity to do your part to end discrimination."

Powwow to Be Held on Campus - 3/30/07

This weekend, Gonzaga's Native American Student Organization will be sponsoring the third annual Powwow in the Martin Centre. Ceremonies will kick off at noon Saturday and go until around midnight. They pick up again Sunday at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Admission is free, and students are encouraged to attend.

Africa is Focus of Weekend Conference - 3/30/07

Four prominent members from the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) are set to arrive in Spokane today to speak at the "Peace Conference: Causes of Conflicts, Conditions of Peace," hosted by Gonzaga.

Fighting the Fires of Hate - 3/23/07

Displays of faux flames and charred books inside Foley Library are guiding visitors to the third-floor exhibit, "Fighting the Fires of Hate." Photographs and video displays line the walls of the Special Collections Reading Room showing the censorship of Nazi Germany under its "Action Against Un-German Spirit" campaign.

Afghanistan faces many challenges in rebuilding - 3/9/07 

"Afghanistan is the original front in the war against terror," said Afghanistan's ambassador to the United States. Said T. Jawed addressed an overflow crowd on Thursday, March 1, in the Barbieri Courtroom of the Gonzaga Law School. Jawed's speech addressed the problems that Afghanistan still faces and the progress made toward reconstruction.

GSBA execs elected - 3/9/07

The Gonzaga student body voted on next year's executive branch last week, with the highest turnout since 2004. "I think it was around 25 percent," Elections Commissioner John Beyer said. "It was about 1,100 [students who voted]." As expected, junior Ben Folger and sophomore Julia Esser won GSBA president and vice president, respectively, completing their unopposed campaigns.

From generation to generation: The tradition continues - 3/9/07

Rabbi Jack Izakson, President Helene Paroff and the Temple Beth Shalom congregation invite community members to come and experience their Jewish culture and tradition at the 66th Annual Kosher Dinner on Sunday, March 11, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

When the Ku Klux Klan comes to mind, so should Daryl Davis. But not for the reasons most people would presume. Daryl Davis, black author and musician, gave a compelling, inspirational and entertaining lecture to an overflow crowd Monday, Feb. 26, in the Barbieri Courtroom of the Gonzaga Law School.

Students raise money and awareness with 30-hour fast - 3/2/07

Many people may never wonder what it would be like to be truly hungry. Not just the I-forgot-to-grab-a-bite-before-class kind of hungry, but the kind of hunger that threatens lives. In an effort to raise both money and awareness for the 29,000 people who die every day due to hunger, 15 Gonzaga students took part in a 30-hour fast this past weekend.

Coexist seeks dialogue among student organizations and clubs - 2/2/07

"On Tuesday, Feb. 6, we're going to try something slightly unusual. We're going to get the ideological clubs of this campus together in the Spokane Room in the COG (the non-carpeted one) and let them listen to each other."

Poet returns for reading -  1/26/07

Sherman Alexie, a renowned poet, writer and comedian, is coming to Gonzaga on Tuesday, Jan. 30, to share some of his poetry in the Globe Room of Cataldo at 7:30 p.m.

Afghan education official visits Gonzaga to learn - 1/26/07

Afghanistan's deputy minister of higher education visited Gonzaga this week on an information-gathering tour of several American universities.

Committee sets sights on new student center - 12/1/07 

Gonzaga is in a state of change. The Bulldogs are adjusting without Morrison, the COG has a fresh coat of paint and a new student center is looming on the horizon.

SMAC'D teams up with University - 11/17/06

The University's long-range planning committee is including the new student advocacy group as an idea generator. Some of the resulting ideas, such as a campus climate assessment, have been seriously discussed among administrators.

Sticks: New martial arts club aims to teach students the "Way of the Sword" - 11/17/06

There's a new club on campus - and you do not need to be a ninja to join in the fun. The Gonzaga Martial Arts Club is "dedicated to the promotion of traditional Japanese martial arts," according to club president and co-founder Dan Robinson. 13 students are currently members.

SMAC'D seeks more diversity - 11/10/06

Students Making Active Change for Diversity (SMAC'D), which the students pronounce "Smacked," advocates changes in administrative policy and campus life. The group has held four meetings since Oct. 18. Between 150 and 160 students are members of the group, and about 30 to 40 students show up at each meeting.

Diversity office renamed intercultural relations - 10/13/06

Gonzaga University's Office of Diversity was relabeled the Office of Intercutural Relations. The reason behind the change in title is ideological, according to Kristine Reeves, administrative assistant in the Office of Intercultural Relations. The previous title carried an individualistic connotation that is not promoted by this office, she said.

Bridge program unites students - 10/6/06

A growing number of students who identify themselves as students of color have an opportunity to come to campus a week before new student orientation to attend the BRIDGE program.

Bridge program promotes racial segregation - 9/22/06

Anyone who attends Gonzaga can see that our campus is clearly not racially diverse. As of fall 2005, minorities represented only 13.59 percent of the freshman student population. Not wanting to appear to be a closed-minded, homogenous, exclusive campus, Gonzaga has instituted various programs to attract minority students to its campus, hoping to increase its credibility as a forward-thinking and globally aware institution.

Minority students are academically qualified to attend Gonzaga - 4/28/06

"Working to bring more minorities to campus or making a commitment to diversity does not mean that the students an institution admits are less qualified. Diversity in these situations is often thought of as negative, as if it were taking slots away from students that are more deserving of being here. The problem with this type of thinking is that it does not give any credit to the students of diverse backgrounds that are admitted to institutions."

Bill to represent all clubs - 4/28/06 

Sen. Bill Hruska introduced a bill at the Gonzaga Student Body Association (GSBA) Senate meeting April 4 requiring the Director of Clubs and Organizations, Sam Ackels, to meet with all the diversity and minority clubs once a month. This meeting would be in addition to the monthly club President's Meeting. The bill was approved by a vote of 15 to 3 with two abstentions.

Cultures meet for food and fun - 4/28/06 

Food, music and dance all served as international language on Earth Day weekend. The largest annual campus cultural gathering took place in Cataldo's Globe Room on Saturday evening under the theme of "Global Mosaic." For the first time in years, the International Student Union's (ISU) dinner party completely sold out. The 28th annual ISU Dinner featured ethnic food, entertainment, raffle and sales booths.

Variety of Latinos to share cultures, free food - 4/21/06

Throughout April, groups across campus have celebrated diversity with festivals and presentations such as the HPIC Luau, the Filipino festival, Japan Week and coming April 30, the La Raza Latina Festival.

Luau to celebrate supernatural leader - 4/7/06

According to legend, Kamehameha (kuh-may-ha-may-ha) virtually fell from the stars. As Halley's comet soared in the skies above, the epic Hawaiian ruler was born. With such a supernatural entrance, it is no wonder that his name means, "the one set apart." The Hawaiian Pacific Islanders Club (HPIC) will honor the iconic figure Saturday by making him the theme of their annual Luau at the Martin Centre.

Bell of Peace awarded to senior involved in HERO - 3/31/06

Olson has been involved in many organizations and fundraisers to enhance awareness of the GLBT movement on Gonzaga's campus. He was recently awarded the "Making a Difference" Youth Award by the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

First Nations' Powwow a unifying and spiritual event for everyone - 3/31/06 

Gonzaga University will host the fifth annual "Unity in Spirit" powwow on April 1 at the Martin Centre. Organized by the First Nations Student Association (FNSA), this colorful event has been in the making for some time, and will include members of tribes from across the Northwest and beyond.

Protesters demonstrate discontent - 3/3/06

A group of students gathered on the steps of Crosby Student Center Wednesday to peacefully protest what they believed was an apathetic stance taken by the University on important issues regarding various types of discrimination. The protest was advocating cultural diversity and racial acceptance at Gonzaga, and it was compelled by the well-known recent campus controversy.

Unity House staying; possible relocation in the future - 3/3/06

Unity House Multicultural Education Center is here to stay on the Gonzaga campus, but the physical form that the campus diversity house will take in the future is still in question. Gonzaga is making plans to begin building a new student life center in the next three years, and concern has arisen that Unity House will be forced to move when this happens.

Gonzaga not committed to human diversity - 3/3/06

"We want you to know that our concerns are nothing new to Gonzaga. They are issues that involve several marginalized groups as well as individuals of our University. Many of us have endured the psychological and physical stress that comes from being part of an underrepresented population within the dominant culture of Gonzaga to attain our academic goals."

Development program evaluates diversity -2/24/06

Approximately 60 staff and faculty members discussed the changing demographics of the world and the growth of Gonzaga at the third lecture in the Diversity Awareness Series, held Feb. 17, entitled "Values Clarification: Our Personal and Community Values as Complex Multicultural Beings in the Same House."

Club chants charge campus - 2/17/06

After the game against St. Mary's ended Feb. 6, the controversy surrounding the Kennel Club's chanting sparked discussions and widespread discontent among faculty and students. Many urged University officials to take action.

Speech delves into King's goal - 2/3/06

Unity House hosted a talk called "Martin Luther King, Jr.: Have We Failed?" Jan. 27 in an effort to keep open discussion surrounding King following the holiday in his name. Kijev "K" Gurley, a graduate student who assists in the Unity House, spoke about the life of King and then led a discussion with the members of the audience.

GU attends homosexuality, Catholicism conference - 11/18/05

Santa Clara University hosted "Out There," a national conference addressing homosexuality and Catholicism, on Oct. 29. About 140 students, scholars and student affairs professionals from 40 universities, including 13 Jesuit institutions, came together to discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) issues in the Catholic university context.

'Homo-sex' talk spurs controversy - 10/28/05

The College Republicans brought Dr. John Diggs to campus Tuesday. Diggs presented a controversial speech titled "The Medical Effects of Homo-Sex" to a packed Jundt Auditorium. Diggs' proposed appearance on campus gave rise to concern on behalf of the University and gay rights advocates.

C5 focuses on creating community - 10/28/05

Over a dozen students gathered in the Unity House Cultural Education Center Monday night to attend the kickoff of the Unity House C5 Speaker Series with guest speaker Mike Roth, athletic director for the University.

Organization reforms to fight biases - 10/14/05

The Alliance Forum, true to its name, is a student-run organization that helps victims of hate or bias related issues meet with a support network of University administrators and trained peers.

Program promotes diversity, mission - 9/30/05

Gonzaga University's Diversity Awareness series, titled "Building Our House through Community Storytelling and Careful Listening," kicked off with its first session Friday, Sept. 23. The program was designed to create a shared understanding of how to bring the University's mission to life through appreciating and learning from diversity.

Bias incident leads to rally - 9/9/05

Students, faculty, administrators and community members joined to stage a speak-out Wednesday evening on the Crosby Student Center steps in response to a race-related incident on campus.

Pre-orientation program offered by Unity House - 9/9/05

Known to many students as the little house on Desmet, Unity House is open to everyone and serves the purpose of cultivating community by making people feel safe to express themselves both educationally and socially.
