Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea

BeverlyDr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, PhD serves as Vice President of Student Affairs at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, VA. She has almost twenty years of experience in higher education. She holds a PhD in Child Development from Texas Woman’s University, M.Ed in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia State University, and a B.S. in Radio/Television/Film-News and Public Affairs from Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Walker-Griffea found during her dissertation research in 2004 that single mother students still face similar obstacles and barriers on college campuses that they faced 25 years ago. She is committed to ensuring that women, especially single mothers, are provided equity in services and academic opportunities while attending college. She believes it is truly the best of times for women, but in some instances it can be viewed as the worst of times. Women at all levels in higher education are still confronting some of the same issues they have coped with over the years. Dr. Walker-Griffea understands that AAWCC is an important organization to provide opportunities to dialogue and create strategies that promote access and equity for all students. She looks forward to Region III being a catalyst for confronting the issues facing women in higher education.

Dr. Walker-Griffea is serving as the 2006-2007 AAWCC representative to the AACC Commission on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.
