The summer reading programs address this problemby emphasizing the two crucial aspects of proficientreading. First, the process of getting throughwords and sentences must become fluent andeffortless. Such effortless reading will enable achild to focus his or her full attention on the content of a story.Second, a child must be deeply and actively engaged with thecontent of the story: visualizing clearly what is described,identifying with the thoughts and feelings of the main characters,and anticipating what might come next. These twosets of skills – reading fluency and active comprehension – formthe backbone of the curriculum forchildren. Students who master both sets of skillsfind reading to be engaging, absorbing, andcompelling. 

What is the classformat? Is there homework?
Classes for all agegroups are conducted in a workshop-style format, in which studentsare coached through a series of skills and activities, and engagein lively classroom discussions about books. In class, studentsgain experience applying new skills and procedures to a variety ofmaterials, from classic literature totextbooks. At home, students practice their newskills on books of their own choosing. Maximum class size varies byprogram level. 

Who teaches the summer readingprograms?
Instructors are from theInstitute of Reading Development, which has been teachingenrichment reading programs to children and adults since1969. The instructors are highly skilled anddedicated to encouraging full participation from all of theirstudents. Instructors consistently receivepositive evaluations from both students and parents.

Is there a guarantee?
No guarantees are madewith regard to the achievement of individualstudents. However, participant evaluationsindicate that both students and parents are pleased with theresults. If you or a parent have questionsregarding whether the program is appropriate for a particularstudent, inquiries should be directed to IRDby calling800-979-8980.

Are the programs suitable forstudents reading below grade level?
The programs areeffective for students who are reading from one to two grades belowgrade level, as measured on standardized tests, depending on theage and grade of the student. Also, many students who have beendiagnosed with a learning or reading disability may benefit fromparticipation, although no diagnostic testing or tutorial servicesare provided, and the programs do not directly address learningdisabilities. Parents who have a student with special needs mustspeak with enrollment staff to determine whether or not the programis appropriate for their child.

Are scholarships available?
Yes. A limited number of partialscholarships are available for economically disadvantaged students.More information coming soon!

How do these programs help studentsdevelop a love of reading?
All children love stories andadventures. Some children, however, do not enjoyreading these same stories independently. Thesestudents always have the frustrating sense of readingabout the story, rather than the absorbing and rewardingexperience of participating in thestory. This lack of absorption is due to aninadequate level of fluency in the reading process and/orinadequate reading comprehension habits.
