Leadership Studies, Doctoral Program, Gonzaga University, Two Tenure-Track Positions 

The Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies at Gonzaga invites applications or nominations for two tenure-track positions to begin as early as January 2009 but not later than August 2009.  The individuals occupying these positions will join the three current faculty positions in a five faculty member team committed to supporting our students and each other in achieving international prominence in the field of leadership studies. The program leads to a Ph.D. and is based on the Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person. The program is designed for working professionals across a range of professions, including higher education, health care, social services, church, business, engineering, government, and K-12 education. The program is interdisciplinary and designed to develop scholarship and professional competencies while encouraging self-reflection and strengthening a commitment of service to others. The program has always attracted highly motivated students. During the past decade the program has been successful in recruiting diverse students with increasingly higher academic qualifications who are better able to fully engage in rigorous scholarship relevant to leadership that makes a difference.  These positions require (a) strong commitment to students and student success and (b) evidence of the ability to work collaboratively with and provide support to colleagues.  Details about the program are available online at http://www.gonzaga.edu/doctoral

Both positions will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level commensurate with experience. 

Responsibilities:

1.            Maintain an active scholarship and research agenda focused on topics relevant to the program.

2.            Teach courses in at least two of the following areas: (a) leadership theory; (b) leadership and philosophy, including ethics; (c) global, social systems, (d) organizational theory and change, (e) research both quantitative and qualitative, (f) civic leadership, and (g) alternative cultural and gender-based leadership and organizational models. Faculty members in the Doctoral Program are expected to teach during summer semesters as well as during the regular academic semesters.

3.            Advise students and serve on dissertation committees.  Most faculty members will chair a minimum of four dissertation committees a year.

4.            Participate in university and community service activities, including university, school, and department meetings and events. 

Qualifications:

1.            Active research and history of demonstrated scholarship relevant to the program.

2.            An earned doctorate from a fully accredited university.

3.            A love for teaching and exceptional teaching abilities.

4.            Experience with graduate teaching and dissertation advising.

5.            Leadership experience.

6.            A commitment to social justice.

Document One: Letter of application with a maximum of 1,100 words that clearly and explicitly addresses each of the following points, even if it is not an area of strength.

1.            Commitment to research and scholarship, personal research and scholarship agenda, summary of number and types of publications and other evidence of research and scholarship activities.

2.            Relevance of your academic training to the position.

3.            Commitment to teaching, philosophy of teaching at the graduate level, number of years (or number of courses) graduate and under-graduate level teaching.

4.            Commitment to advising, experience serving as chair or member on graduate dissertation/ thesis committees.

5.            Your personal philosophy of leadership and experience in leadership roles. 

6.            Commitment to social justice and involvement in social justice activities.

7.            Diversity and international experience you could bring to the position.

8.            Specific expertise in at least two but not more than four of the following areas: (a) leadership theory; (b) leadership and philosophy, including ethics; (c) global, social systems, (d) organizational theory and change, (e) research both quantitative and qualitative, (f) civic leadership, and (g) alternative cultural and gender-based leadership and organizational models.

9.            Unique qualifications you could bring to the position.

Additional Material:  At the appropriate time, finalists for the positions will be requested to provide in .pdf format (a) a course syllabus, (b) copy of one recent journal article or other appropriate example of research and scholarship activity, and (c) quantitative and qualitative evaluations by students preferably in two graduate level courses.
