Degree Requirements

To satisfy degree requirements for the Ph.D. in Leadership Studies students must complete a total of at least 60 credits applicable toward the degree conferral and must pass through four phases and three milestones.

Phases and Milestones

1. PRE-CANDIDACY Phase: completion of core courses.

2. CANDIDACY Phase: Application to begin candidacy, completion of a candidacy paper.
Milestone 1: successful granting of candidacy status

3. PROPOSAL Phase: Selection of dissertation committee, successful admission to proposal seminar, completion of a dissertation proposal.
Milestone 2successful defense of the proposal before the dissertation committee

4. DISSERTATION Phase: Successful passing of the IRB to gain permission for conduction dissertation research, completion of the dissertation.
Milestone 3: successful signing off of the dissertation by the dissertation committee.

Coursework Components and Credits

  • Core Courses (12 credits): Students are required to complete the core courses prior to applying for candidacy.
  • Ethics (4 credits)
  • Research (15 credits: 9 course credits, 1 credit proposal defense, 5 credits dissertation writing)
  • Electives (29 credits): The total number of required credits equals 31, leaving 29 credits as electives. Students satisfy the liberal arts component of the degree through electives.

ELECTIVES:

  • INDIVIDUALIZED STUDY/TRANSFER: No more than 12 elective credits can be either individualized study credits or doctoral level credits transferred in from another university. Transfer credits are subject to review and approval by the Doctoral Faculty.

  • ON-LINE, INTERNSHIP/MENTORSHIP: No more than 3 credits can be taken on-line or through an internship or mentorship (DPLS 766).

OFF-CAMPUS STUDY:

  • No more than a total of 21 credits may be completed off-campus
    • 12 individualized study or transfer credits,
    • 3 on-line or internship/mentorship credits,
    • 1 credit for proposal defense and 
    • 5 dissertation credits.
