Templates & Instructions

Notes regarding older versions - Blue, Red, and White Books (APA 5)

The DPLS program provides a variety of instructions and tools intended to guide students in scholarly writing and use of the templates:

But I've Never Written A Dissertation Before: A User-friendly Guide for the Preparation of the Dissertation Proposal and Dissertation. Revised version of THE BLUE BOOK Word FILE November 3 2008 (BLUE BOOK PDF FILE) (only minor edits on Sept 2006 and March 2007 versions, see IRB requirements).

Guide to Style and Mechanics, THE RED BOOK June 2009 (only minor edits, RED BOOK .pdf file).  Expect to see APA 6 revisions of both the revised Blue Book and a new Red book in the near future that will correct minor mistakes.

Spiral-bound hard copies of the PDF Version of the APA 5 Blue Book can be purchased by contacting the Program Coordinator.

The APA 5 templates provided by the program for the dissertation, academic papers, and the candidacy paper are regular MS word documents with about 25 predefined styles, page and section formats, built-in Table of Contents, List of Tables, and List of Figures. DPLSdiss62.doc replaces DPLSdiss61.dot and includes corrections on the Title page to make Faculty lower case, adds space after block quotes, and the addition of new styles for the last item in block quote lists: "Block 1.5 List, Last in List" and "Block List, Last in List."  These new styles add space after the last item in a block quote list. The first page identifying the version of the template will need to be deleted.  If the template is being used for the Proposal, remove the copyright, signature, dedication, acknowledgments, and abstract pages (but save because they must be reinserted after the Proposal has been approved). The instructions that had been on the first page of the template are now part of the White Book.  Both the dissertation and the paper template use the same formatting styles.
