AJCU Communication Conference

Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities - Communication Conference

July 22 - 25, 2009,          Gonzaga University

Co-hosted by the Departments of Communication Arts and Communication and Leadership Studies at Gonzaga

The planning is underway for our meetings this July.  This time of year is often glorious in Spokane.  Spokane is nestled in the foothills of the far western section of the Rockies and enjoys a reputation for outdoor life and recreation.  It has a magnificent waterfall running through the heart of the city with the great Centennial Trail that runs out to Lake Coeur d'Alene.  For those of you who have never been out west, you might consider a rental car and go to one of our regional National Parks like Glacier!  Perhaps consider bringing your family!

Our Deans Manganaro and McFarland have been generous in supporting the AJCU-CC Conference and are hosting a visit to one of our many local Washington wineries.   Our Jesuit Community will also serve as hosts and send out a welcome as well.

The registration fee this summer will be $200 and includes apartments, all meals, and transportation to and from the airport and to all local events. We are planning a visit to a local winery and not to be topped by Marquette, perhaps a lake cruise! (For veterans of the AJCU-CC, we won't forget a unique ice crème event, either).  Probably instead of a "rock star" bus, we will try for a stagecoach!

For four nights and three days we will be exploring with colleagues from around the country how our discipline is enacted at more than 26 American Jesuit institutions.  In the AJCU Conference, communication is one of the few discipline specific organizations.  I have attended for the last 19 years and find this conference even more valuable than my professional organizations.  This is really a unique opportunity.

Please consider this both an invitation to attend and also a call for proposed papers/discussions.  Accepted proposals can later be submitted as finished papers for Conference Proceedings, which can be valuable in the reappointment, promotion and tenure process. But even if you don't want to present, there is great camaraderie and a warm community spirit.  Some of the themes we are encouraging include:

· Looking broadly at communication courses across our campus for evidence of fusing students and scholarship to make a difference in communities.
· Experiential learning
· Team or co-teaching
· Integrated or trans-disciplinary studies (Communication and Leadership Studies)
· Communication and Community
· Building Social Change
· Converged Media, Backpack Journalism, and the Reinvention of Reporting
· Jesuit Mission and Teaching

Please consider attending.  Connie Hickman (Program Assistant in Communication Arts) and Heidi Mitchell (Program Assistant in the MA in Communication and Leadership Studies) have agreed to help be our support staff for the Conference.
