Annual Report: Gonzaga University’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is a club that strives to achieve hands-on experience in developing, planning, and working together towards projects within the mechanical and automotive field. Our club works closely with the Gonzaga University machine Shop, and focuses on providing exposure for students to apply classroom knowledge to club-based projects.
During the 2013-2014 school year, we built Gonzaga’s first SAE Baja Car since the 1990’s. We competed against 100 other schools in El Paso, Texas, in April of 2014. Our car design was recognized for its unique hydraulic drive system and trailing arm suspension. In the past, SAE has also been involved with the Demolition Derby Car competition, winning 1st place in 2012, and designing RC airplanes.
This school year we plan on again competing in the SAE Baja Competition in Portland, Oregon in May of 2015. We have decided to redesign and rebuild our car, using what we learned from the competition last year to design for better efficiency. For this international and collegiate SAE Baja Series competition, our team will have researched concepts, designed systems, modeled all car components on SolidWorks, performed calculations, simulated impact testing using FEA software, and built the vehicle all within our SAE club.
