General Admission Requirements
Note: These are the requirements for every graduate program applicant. See individual program for specific requirements.

For certification all candidates must take the WEST-B.

Prerequisite: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required for all School of Education graduate degrees.

Each applicant must submit the following materials to the School of Education Graduate Admissions office:

A completed application form

$50 non-refundable application fee

Two official transcripts from each college or university attended

Additional Requirements for International Applicants
International applicants must submit foreign transcripts in the original language and an English copy.

Submission of TOEFL score of at least 550 (written), 213 (computer-based), or 79 (iBT) by each international applicant who has graduated from a foreign college or university and whose native language is not English

Submission of a financial declaration and supporting documentation by each on campus international applicant

M.Ed. in Literacy

The official score from the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) general aptitude test or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).  Scores must be less than five years old.  This requirement may be waived if the applicant has an advanced degree or if you are a Gonzaga University graduate with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

M.A. in Teaching At-Risk Students

A written statement of purpose addressing the applicant's interest in graduate studies which relates to some area in the field, assessing the applicant's current strengths, and describing what the applicant hopes to gain from a master's degree program.

Two letters of recommendation (from immediate or past supervisors) sent directly from the recommending persons to the School of Education Graduate Admissions office with the confidential recommendation forms attached

An comprehensive interview with faculty

Applicant must be a registered nurse with a BSN or other BS degree approved by the program director at Gonzaga University, and be able to receive a Washington State RN license.

Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.  The program is moving toward implementing a minimum science course prerequisite.  Preference will be given to applicants who have courses in: chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, physiology, pathophysiology, and anatomy/zoology.

A minimum of two years experience as a registered nurse is required prior to interviewing for the MAE program.

CCRN certification is now required for applicants and evidence of CCRN certification must be submitted with the application.

Applicants must have at least one year, preferably two years, of adult critical care experience prior to application, within the past 5 years. The best critical care experience is obtained in a busy ICU, CICU, MICU, or SICU. The competencies desired are long term management of adult patients on ventilators with invasive monitors and vasoactive medications.

A written statement addressing the applicant's expectations of a career in nurse anesthesia.

Two letters of recommendation (one from an immediate supervisor, and one from a nurse or M.D. with whom the applicant is working) sent directly from the recommending persons to the School of Education Graduate Admissions office with the confidential recommendation forms attached.

The official score from the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) general aptitude test.  Scores must be less than five years old.  All applicants must submit their GRE scores.

Applications must be complete by December 1, 2008 for enrollment January 2010.  Interviews will be in late January or early February, 2009.

A written statement of purpose addressing the following two (2) topics (one typed page, single spaced):
a description of interests in graduate studies in counseling and relation to the desire to become a counselor; and an assessment of current strengths as a potential counselor and description of benefits in gaining a counseling master's degree.

The official score from the Gradate Records Exam (GRE) aptitude test or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).  Scores must be less than five years old.

A minimum of two (2) letters of recommendation to be sent directly from the recommending persons (your employer, professor, supervisor, or colleague) to Graduate Admissions using the confidential recommendation forms.

A comprehensive interview with Counselor Education faculty.

An autobiographical letter of application that addresses: formal education and professional teaching experience; academic achievements and honors; other professional experience; and personal characteristics and abilities specified in the program application.

Two letters of recommendation sent directly from the recommending persons to the School of Education Graduate Admissions office using the confidential recommendation forms.

Nomination letter from a superintendent or principal.

The official score from the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) aptitude test or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).  Scores must be less than five years old.  This requirement may be waived if the applicant has an advanced degree or if you are a Gonzaga University graduate with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

M.Ed. in Special Education

MIT in Special Education

1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

2. Passing score on all three areas of the WEST B exam (content tested: reading, math, and writing).

Note: Provisional acceptance may be given in some cases for one semester in order for candidates to complete necessary admission requirements.  When candidates are accepted with provisional status financial aid is withheld until full acceptance into the program.

M.A. in Sport & Physical Education

Two letters of recommendation (from immediate or past supervisors) sent directly from the recommending persons to the School of Education Graduate Admissions office with the confidential recommendation forms.

The official score from the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) aptitude test or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).  Scores must be less than five years old.  This requirement may be waived if the applicant has an advanced degree.

Master of Initial Teaching

A statement of purpose that specifically addresses: a) commitment to becoming a K-12 educator, b) past and present academic experiences, c) interest in learning, and d) ability to work with children or youth

Two letters of recommendation from individuals who have recent knowledge of the applicant's capabilities. An optional letter of recommendation may be submitted to add additional reference support. Individuals recommending applicant should be selected with care and be able to attest to the qualities listed on the confidential recommendation form.

A personal interview with the MIT admissions committee

Successful passage of the Washington Educator Skills Tests, WEST-B and the WEST-E/PRAXIS II in endorsable area. Full acceptance will not be granted until all three sections of the WEST-B and the WEST-E in endorsable area have been passed. These tests will replace the above requirements for the GRE or MAT.

Content Review Form Specific to Elementary or Secondary

An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above during the last two years of undergraduate work is a minimum expectation. A GPA below 3.0 may be acceptable if other application materials support admission.
