Music Scholarship Audition Guidelines
A. General Instructions
1. You must apply to the University, and apply for Financial Aid to be considered for a music scholarship, although you do not have wait for any financial aid or any other information to be submitted to the University before AUDITIONING for a music award.
2. All materials for the Music Scholarship application are due by the February 15 deadline. The required materials are:
a. The Music Scholarship application
b. Two letters of recommendation from non-family members
c. A live or recorded audition
3. If you are planning a live audition, please call Cheryl Carney at (509) 313-6733. Auditions are scheduled on an individual basis.
4. If you are unable to perform a live audition due to distance or schedule conflicts, you may submit a recorded audition. Recorded auditions should be in cd format. Other formats will be accepted, however. The recording may be on cassette tape or compact disc. Because we are interested in hearing you play or sing at your best, you should use the highest quality audio recording equipment available to you. The recording must include the required audition material listed above. Recordings will not be returned.
B. Preparation for the Audition
Every audition should demonstrate your various abilities. You and your music teachers are the best judges of what is appropriate for you and what will best display your talent. Please read the instructions carefully for each area. Please call 509 323-6733 with questions.
Instrumental (Wind, Brass, Percussion & Strings)
Auditions should include two solos or etudes of contrasting nature (e.g., slow and lyrical, faster and more technical). A single extended solo may be sufficient, if contrasting sections are performed. Works should be performed with accompaniment if possible.
Percussionists are encouraged to perform on at least two of the three following instruments: timpani, marimba, and snare. String players are encouraged to memorize.
Jazz
Auditions should include parts from your high school jazz band or of contrasting styles and tempos. You may improvise using any of the Aebersold Play-along volumes.
Keyboard
Auditions should include TWO pieces of CONTRASTING styles from different musical periods. At least one should be memorized.
Please include a list of technique and repertoire that you have studied in high school. If you are a transfer student include your college repertoire as well.
Vocal
Auditions should include TWO selections. Depending on your level of study, appropriate choices include art songs, folk songs, hymns, or arias from opera, operetta, or oratorio. English is appropriate for one or both selections
Composition
Students should submit scores of their work; and a performance, or a tape of a performance, if one is available.
