The Center for Excellence in Media Literacy at
Gonzaga University

A Regional Center for Media Literacy Education and a partnership between
Gonzaga University and the University of Washington

The Department of Communication and Leadership Studies and The School of Professional Studies at Gonzaga University are the home for the Center for Excellence in Media Literacy. The Center carries on the work of the Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media (http://www.nwresponsiblemedia.org/).

The Center provides a research home for Graduate Students in the MA in Communication and Leadership Studies, undergraduate students in the Departments of Communication Arts and Education, and students interested in Media Literacy.

Additionally, the Center is part of a larger consortium at The University of Washington called the NW Center for Excellence in Media Literacy.

There are regional Centers in Kitsap County, Seattle and Vancouver, Washington. Part of the funding for this Center comes from the Teen Health and the Media Program at the University.

The goals of the Center forExcellence inMedia Literacy at Gonzaga University include:

  • Improve research and training in the area of media literacy.
  • Explore positive solutions to the problem of media violence in the lives of our children.
  • Organize and educate our community about media literacy and media responsibility.
  • Plan and develop an effective resolution to the issues of media violence.

How can the Center at Gonzaga help you?

Resource material and speakers: Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media (NW-ARM) has a variety of resource materials of interest to parents, schools and other community members who are concerned about the influence of television and other media on our children. Our publications are for those who are seeking to become media-wise and are available to all the organization's members. The NW-ARM also has a speaker's bureau to help groups that want to hold a program on media literacy.
