On April 18, amid the cheers of 1,500 students and 500 communitymembers, we announced our Capital Campaign B Educating People theWorld Needs Most. Campaign Chair Jim Jundt reported to the audiencethat we already have $60 million committed toward our $119 milliongoal. While we still have a long way to go to realize our goal, Ithought you might like to know how this campaign will affect ourfuture and how we are already using some early Campaign commitmentsto actualize that future.
We have been blessed with some early gifts that are allowing us tobegin this process. With respect to our mission endowments, we havetripled the number of University Ministry opportunities on campus. It has allowed us not only to increase the number of liturgies, retreat and education programs, but also to allow more students toparticipate in all of them. Also, we have begun a major renovationof our Student Chapel, and I'll report on this beautiful additionto campus in the fall issue of GONZAGA.
Tom and Camilla Tilford have funded the Gonzaga Institute ofEthics which provides programs in ethics across the curriculum, character development (where Gonzaga students help high schoolstudents to understand character development), and a major ethicsoutreach program for CEOs and engineers.
We continue to seek support to endow our service, justice andleadership programs. I will keep you posted on our progress.
With respect to academic endowments (for financial aid, facultydevelopment, and program support) we have an ambitious goal of $40million. Already, we have received $3 million for merit endowments. The majority of these funds will be dedicated to the IgnatianLeaders Scholarship whose participants (approximately 35-45 peryear) have an entering GPA of 3.99, an average SAT score of 1330,and a service/leadership record unrivaled by anyone I know.
Both the Diversity Scholarships and the Gonzaga OpportunityScholarships provide funds for our students with the greatestfinancial need. One benefactor, upon seeing a photograph of astudent recipient from his geographical area, was moved along withhis wife to pledge $1 million immediately to this pressing need sothat the economically challenged of his area could have theopportunity of a Gonzaga University education.
We continue to work hard to raise additional scholarship funds andfunds for faculty development and program support in the Schools ofBusiness, Law and Engineering.
With respect to our new or renovated facilities, four facilitiesare under construction this summer.
While we continue to seek funds for our new science building, inMay we began the first phase of construction. Our new 37,000square-foot science building will double the amount of laboratoryspace for the sciences. The second step will be to renovate the oldHughes Hall facility and build a greenhouse on the south side ofthe complex. Construction will continue throughout the summer andall of next year, and be completed in September 2003.
Construction of a new student fitness center that will provideover 16,000 square feet for exercise equipment and trainingfacilities for students is under way. This was our students'highest priority (though I must admit I am completely bewildered bythe need, let alone the desire, for exercise).
The initial phase of an expansion of the Herak EngineeringBuilding began this month as well. This will include an addition of5,000 square feet, and a modernization of classrooms on both thenorth and south ends of the building.
We continue to plan for our new performing arts center, a new wingon the School of Business Administration building, and our6,000-seat arena. Photographs of these plans and an update on thefund-raising progress will be featured in upcoming issues ofGONZAGA.
Please accept my sincere thanks for your help, both past andfuture, in making our dreams a reality for our students.
