SUBJ: Invitation to Participate: Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration
DATE: January 17, 2014
Each year, the Spokane community gathers to commemorate the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In communion with cities around the nation, Spokane is inspired by the work of Dr. King, who dedicated his life to the pursuit of equality and justice for all, and by his commitment to use peaceful means to achieve social justice.
In commemoration of Dr. King’s life, Gonzaga observes this coming Monday by making it a holiday. This year, I hope you will join me in honoring Dr. King’s extraordinary work and example at Spokane’s Annual Unity March on Monday, January 20, 2014. Citizens will gather at 10 a.m. at the Spokane Convention Center, 334 West Spokane Falls Blvd., and walk in a demonstration of strength and support, to River Park Square. A community resource fair takes place at River Park Square until 2 p.m.
In addition to the Unity March, Gonzaga University is sponsoring commemorations organized by the Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center to honor Dr. King this year. There are additional events I want to make you aware of:
King Day Youth Empowerment Luncheon and Silent Auction
Saturday, January 18, 2014, 11:30-1:30 p.m.
Shadle Park High School - 4327 N. Ash Street, Spokane
Sunday, January 19, 2014, 4-6p.m.
Holy Temple C.O.G.I.C. - 806 W. Indiana
Featuring Carolyn Gordon, Associate Professor of Communication, School of Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA
If you have an interest or questions about these two events, I invite you to contact the MLK Jr. Family Outreach Center at 509.455.8722 ext. 202.
Gonzaga University demonstrates its commitment to social justice in a variety of ways. It is a privilege for us to take a partnership role in Spokane’s commemoration of Dr. King. If your schedule permits, I invite you to wear your Gonzaga gear, look for the GU banners to find your colleagues and friends, and be part of 2014’s celebration next Monday morning. Thank you.
